"This all-day Russian cafe and bakery has savory piroshkis, flaky pastries, and a never-ending menu of cookies, tarts, and cakes (there's also a full menu of entrées). Basically, this Richmond spot, which has been around in some form since the 1950s, is the one-stop shop for all the warm, sweet, savory, and comforting dishes that will make you feel like a well-worn cable knit sweater. The rest of the neighborhood knows this, too, since there’s always a line, and people warming up on the parklet over some meat-filled pelmeni or delicate honey cakes that nail the light, spongy texture every time. Food Rundown photo credit: Patrick Wong Pelemeni A fantastic—and generous—serving of dumplings. The wrapper is thin and chewy and the pork and beef filling is firm and tender. Always order the version that comes in a steaming bowl of light chicken broth and make good use of the accompanying sour cream for dipping before every bite. And soak up any leftover soup with the two included slices of bread. photo credit: Patrick Wong Piroshki If you’re on the go, this is a great option because it holds up well, even after a couple hours. It’s flaky, chewy, and has plenty of filling. We’ve had a couple that could use a bit more salt, but we’d still order this over and over—especially the beef one. photo credit: Patrick Wong Honey Cake We get this every time we’re here. Every slice is soft and moist, and the thick layers of cream are smooth and just sweet enough. If you’re getting just one thing here, this should be it." - Lani Conway
