"The chef/owner of Akara House used to work at McDonald’s, and usually that wouldn’t be a significant fact, but at this counter-service Nigerian spot in Crown Heights, it explains a lot. Their akara sandwich, the specialty here, is a Big Mac-esque creation involving a thick fritter, vegan cheese, mayo and pickles. Instead of being a sad excuse for meat, it’s a tasty bean-based innovation, with an ultra-soft center and a crackly exterior. The sandwiches are made in a small kitchen that might resemble the one in your own apartment, complete with a regular old oven, and littered with industrial grade pots full of jollof rice.
