"If you’ve lived in Atlanta long enough, you’ve likely had a school field trip, family outing, or some sort of staged photoshoot at Southern Belle Farm. And if you’ve never been, consider picking fruit here a worthy notch on your Metro Atlanta punchcard. The McDonough farm and market is a fun throwback to a simpler life, when peaches came from trees and not carefully stacked mounds in the grocery aisle. And the prices are pretty reasonable, too (a peck of peaches costs less than $23 and a quart of blueberries goes for $9). After you’re satisfied with your fruit haul, hit the bakery for a scoop of the farm's own strawberry ice cream on lightly sweet poundcake. Food Rundown U-Pick Fruits After you pay for a bucket, load it up with as much fruit as you can gather from the fields. Come for strawberries in spring, peaches in summer, and muscadines and flowers in early fall. photo credit: Tabia Lisenbee-Parker Strawberry Shortcake The dry cake isn’t winning any blue ribbons on its own. But when you factor in the ice cream, strawberries from the farm, and a little fresh air, this is as comforting a taste of farm life as reading Charlotte's Web (minus the devastating parts, of course). photo credit: Tabia S. Lisenbee-Parker Spring Fling This is a great order. You get a bit of velvety housemade ice cream mixed with strawberry slushie. It’s sweet and refreshing without the cottony, artificial taste you get from gas station slushies. photo credit: Tabia Lisenbee-Parker photo credit: Tabia S.
