"It’s not hard to find really good tacos in Bushwick, and Ilegal Taqueria, on the edge of the Evergreens Cemetery, is certainly part of that scene. The shop is painted like a sunset, with a cutout in their front window that lets you see the trompo spinning with al pastor from outside. Follow the instinct to gawk, because the al pastor is our favorite taco here. The charred flavors of the pork come through, and the big chunky bites of pineapple bring the sweetness. Ilegal Taqueria also double wraps their tacos in freshly griddled tortillas (and make burritos and plates as well), making it a great takeout spot. But if you dine in, you’ll get to eat on a plate that matches the paint on the outside of the shop. So cheerful. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Food Rundown Al Pastor Ilegal nails their al pastor. It’s bright orange, charred, smoky and sweet, and the well-seasoned meat tastes like chile powder and annato. This is the taco to get here. photo credit: Kate Previte Barbacoa The barbacoa tastes like it's been cooking for a long, long time. In other words, there's a deep chipotle flavor and the meat is tender and shredded. It doesn’t quite hit the highs of the pastor, but it’s a worthy second taco. photo credit: Kate Previte Nopales Bright and acidic, these nopales are a great vegetarian option. They’ve got a little bit of crunch left in them, and come positively showered in salty queso fresco. photo credit: Kate Previte" - Will Hartman
