"Yellow Ranger makes the kind of savory fried food we crave after two mezcal palomas in on a Friday night. It’s a counter-service operation at Golden Horn, a casual, ‘70s-themed cocktail bar located beneath Barfly’s in North Loop. This is bar food through a Chinese-American lens, which means you’re a QR code away from crispy crab rangoons, wonton chips with chili-spiked queso, and a semi-smashed burger with charred scallions and hot mustard aioli. It’s not stuff you need to go out of your way to get if you’re at home watching Netflix, but it’s a solid option to have nearby when you’re out grabbing drinks. Food Rundown photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Crab Rangoons The wontons are crispy, and there’s a generous portion of cream cheese and crab inside. Start with an order of these. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Crispy Green Beans These are great. They’re seasoned well and the fresh mint on top is a nice touch. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Lo Mein The noodles are cooked well, but the sauce is a little too heavy on the wine, which ends up overpowering the taste. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Taiwanese Fried Chicken The breading is a bit uneven and the meat could use a dipping sauce, but it’s fried well and the salty chicken pairs nicely with those palomas. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Semi-Smashed Burger Yellow Ranger’s burger combines a thick center with paper-thin edges—kind of like a UFO. We love a smashed patty with crispy edges, but ours was a little overcooked, and burnt around the edges. Skip this." - Nicolai McCrary
