"There’s a definite connection between Rao’s and this Irish steakhouse from 1950, and it’s not just that they both appear as backdrops for wheeler-dealers in the show Billions. The one time we stopped by Donohue’s on the Upper East Side before a planned Rao’s visit, the man next to us at the bar was pre-gaming on his way to Rao’s too, for his grown son’s birthday. (He’d come directly from Grand Central with his suitcase.) We never made it to East Harlem that night—the Donohue’s martini with a pint-glass sidecar of ginny ice is no joke—but the two restaurants mesh well. Though the steaks are nothing to write home about, and the burger is a close cousin to the one at J.G. Melon, the bar banter at Donohue’s is top tier, and who knows, might include some juicy stories about a Rao’s regular. Distance from Rao’s: 32 minutes via subway" - sonal shah, willa moore
