"Like the original in Williamsburg, the East Village location of Win Son Bakery puts its foot on the gas and doesn’t let up. At this Taiwanese-American counter-service spot, the baseball-sized shrimp patties come lodged in squishy milk buns, crackly fried chicken wears a reddish salty-sweet glaze, and laminated bolo bao are capped with flaky chocolate. A meal here is never subtle, and rarely disappointing. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute The griddled, grease-leaking scallion pancake BEC put this place on the map, and it hasn’t lost a step. Try one, then spend the rest of your life exploring the rest of Win Son Bakery’s extensive catalogue. Get your scallion pancake stuffed with floppy mortadella, enjoy a dense fan tuan with egg and pickled greens, or get a panko-coated bun that reads a jelly donut oozing pork stew. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Win Son Bakery is open until at least 9pm every day, and it tends to clear out once people stop needing bacon, so keep this place in mind for a breezy lunch or dinner. The bare concrete room with a few rows of low tables doesn't offer much ambiance beyond some Blood Orange on the stereo, but they have wine, cocktails, and a double smashburger that requires just as many napkins as the signature BEC. Food Rundown BEC Scallion Pancake One of the city’s top breakfast sandwiches and a certified classic. Tightly wrapped inside of a dense and chewy scallion pancake, you’ll find scrambled eggs, melted havarti, and crisp planks of bacon. The mayo-based ginger sauce on the side is entirely unnecessary, but if you need an over-the-top bite, dip away. photo credit: Kate Previte Mortadella Scallion Pancake It doesn’t get as much attention, but the mortadella sandwich is just as electric as the BEC, with pickled pepperoncini that help cut through all the grease and oozing cheese. photo credit: Kate Previte Shrimp Milk Bun Some days, this is our favorite thing here. It depends on whether we’re in the mood for a juicy, fried, and intensely salty puck of shrimp. photo credit: Kate Previte Pork Biàn Dāng Win Son Bakery offers a few lunch sets that are exclusive to their East Village location, including this one with minced pork belly, snow pea salad, and a jammy soy egg. For an all-in-one meal that’ll run you $25, it’s a great option. photo credit: Kate Previte Rice Noodles Another East Village exclusive, this cup of warm rice noodles littered with shrimp, chives, and onion is well on its way to classic status. photo credit: Kate Previte Imperial Glaze Chicken Box Win Son Bakery’s exceedingly crispy fried chicken comes in two varieties: five spice cayenne (mostly tastes like salt) and imperial glaze (pictured). Choose the latter. With its sticky sweet coating, it's much more compelling. photo credit: Kate Previte Golden Sesame Caesar Don't waste your time with this humdrum pile of greens. We appreciate the attempt, but salads just aren't in Win Son Bakery's DNA." - Bryan Kim
