"Eat Momo is not only one of our daily affirmations, it’s also the name of this bright, breezy, yet decidedly mediocre restaurant in Borough Yards. It’s a canteen-type space with plenty of cheery pseudo sunshine accents to help passing office workers forget the rain. The Nepali dumpling headliners are handmade, but their vacation in the freezer doesn't end well. Although we’ve encountered plenty of frozen dumpling success stories in our time, these arrive soggy, molten, or falling apart quicker than us in the midst of a break-up. For a quick lunch in the area, you’re better off risking an encounter with a tourist’s selfie stick for something excellent in Borough Market. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Food Rundown photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Pork Momo This is reliable, a bit soft, and has a sincere commitment to structural integrity. Both times we tried this pork number the wrapper was a little congealed but dutifully intact, and the filling has an—albeit very subtle—salty flavour. Fight the good momo fight, little guy. Paneer Momo The inside is like molten lava that appears to have a vendetta against the surface of our tongue. The milky, mild flavours of the paneer are entirely overwhelmed by carrot. Paging the nearest spice rack, these momo need you. Vegetable Momo Soggy chaos. And we say this as people who are prone to leaving our umbrellas at home, so we’re seasoned experts in the field. The moisture from the white cabbage and soy chunks causes some intense wrapper tears at the slightest nudge of a chopstick. Tomato Achar Although this achar lacks the polite kick of chilli we’re after and has a much creamier texture than others we’ve tried, it definitely does taste like tomato with a little warming, nutty aftertaste. And that’s something." - Heidi Lauth Beasley
