"On its cramped stretch of Stockton St. in Chinatown, Metro Hong Kong Dessert is a reprieve from the constant shuffling of tourists and stop-and-go traffic right outside. This cafe has tightly packed tables, so no conversation is private and service is often slowed down by staff stopping to have lengthy conversations with the neighborhood regulars. All this to say, don’t expect to be in and out like most other Chinese diners in the city. Metro Hong Kong Dessert is still worth a visit to eat through their an extensive menu with dim sum dishes, cha chaan teng classics like preserved egg congee and Chinese crullers, and Cantonese staples of roast duck and chow fun. Despite its name, the dessert section is quite minimal and not why you’re here—focus on the savory dishes, particularly the chicken fried rice tossed with slightly crispy and charred chunks of meat, as well as the beef cheung fun silky enough to swallow whole. If you are looking for something sweet, laser in on the mango sago or grab a fruit smoothie to go. Just make sure to bring cash or accept your fate of paying a 4% credit card surcharge. photo credit: Patrick Wong photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong
