Dosanko - Review - Downtown Eastside - Vancouver - The Infatuation

"On a sparse stretch of Powell Street with little else around to draw you in, Dosanko stands alone. Part neighbourhood café, part vintage kissaten, it’s great for both quick lunches and slow dinners. The husband-and-wife duo behind it built the menu around how they eat at home: Hokkaidō-style comfort food shaped by Northern Japan’s cold climate and farming and fishing traditions, but with local ingredients. There are staples like curry rice (add an egg or tonkatsu if you know what’s good), a rich egg salad sando on cake-like milkbread, and a salad of foraged watercress and pickled fiddleheads, but you should always check the specials before ordering off the main menu to see what’s fresh. Save room for dessert, even at lunch. The matcha mille êpe is worth it, especially with a hot mug of amazake, which is a mildly sweet, probiotic fermented rice drink." - Michelle Sproule
