"When you’ve had enough of the erratic operating hours at Golden Gate Bakery in SF, go to Ruby King in Oakland. Not only does it have a consistent schedule (7am-5pm daily except Tuesdays), it also serves egg tarts that are just as good. The pastry shell is ruffled and flaky and packed with a dense, not-too-sweet custard. Trays of these things are constantly coming out of the kitchen, so don’t be worried if you encounter a line. We suggest getting a boxful as well as a few of the wife cakes—the winter melon filling is chewy and smooth. There’s plenty of tables, though you may need to hover and wait out the regulars as they catch up over a game of cards." - Patrick Wong
