Bringing contemporary Mexican flavours to the colourful Vesterbro district, this restaurant from celebrity chef Rosio Sanchez has become a standout for dishes that challenge expectations of what Mexican food can be in Denmark. One of my favourites is the spicy tuna tostada sprinkled with grasshoppers, a Mexican delicacy that might sound like a Man vs Food stunt to Westerners but makes total sense once you taste how the crisp grasshoppers complement the soft tuna and crunch of the tortilla chip. The menu also showcases ingredients like habanero, avocado and black beans in inspired combinations, reflecting Rosio’s desire – shaped by her five years as a pastry chef at Noma – to preserve and elevate Mexican culinary heritage in the same way Noma did for Danish food, despite early doubts that such a concept could succeed in this part of the world. If a table proves hard to get, smaller Hija De Sanchez stalls around the city offer quick hits of the same spirit through tacos and churros. - Whelan Barzey
