"Set around a bright-red pedestrian crossing on either side of Al Modam Road about 70 km from Dubai, this boutique lodge transforms two 1960s stone buildings—a former grocery store and clinic—into a contemporary desert retreat. Jonathan Ashmore of ANARCHITECT designed the property to blend with the sand and rugged mountains, using varied shades of brown, beige and taupe stone and cement, retaining original elements while adding terraces of local stone, concrete and iron; minimalist rooms include skylights that frame the desert sky. A standout feature is a one-of-a-kind hands-free spa with three self-guided therapy rooms: an aromatic heated-herb sauna infused with chamomile, cinnamon, rose buds and star anise; a tropical shower area with rain-like sprays and diffused light; and a Himalayan-salt–infused tepidarium for respiratory and relaxation benefits. The natural salt-water swimming pool opens to sweeping desert views, while rooftop sit-outs, fire pits and a roadhouse-style restaurant (serving international dishes alongside Emirati items such as balaleet and chebab, plus an optional barbecue setup) encourage slow, nature-focused stays. Staff can arrange excursions to the nearby Mleiha Archaeological Centre, hiking and mountain-biking trips, as well as meditation and stargazing sessions, making the retreat a peaceful yet accessible escape from the city." - Chaitali Patel
