"Housed in a former French colonial governor’s mansion beside the Royal Residence, this riverside property blends Tropical Modernist architecture with a contemporary Scandinavian-chic layer and Khmer artistry. Designed originally by British architect Gary Fell and recently renovated and expanded under interior designer Malee Whitcraft in collaboration with Bloom Architecture, the hotel grew from 29 to 80 rooms and reopened under the management of Avani Hotels & Resorts. The site emphasizes a reverence for nature—century-old trees (one piercing two storeys), pocket gardens, lemongrass-lined ponds, and a central in-ground saltwater lap pool—while interiors favor muted colours, clear lines and vintage touches such as rotary phones and Groma typewriters. Handmade textiles, bamboo furniture, ceramic dining ware and social-enterprise rattan baskets sourced from local artisans reinforce Khmer craft and heritage throughout the property." - Tara FT Sering
