"Hidden in cedar and cypress forests and surrounded by hilltop villages, this UNESCO-listed pilgrimage is a network of seven hiking paths through the remote Kii mountain range in Wakayama prefecture. The traditional six-day trek, still popular with pilgrims today, retraces routes used by Kyoto’s emperors almost 1,000 years ago and is punctuated by small shrines, temples and waterfalls. Designated a World Heritage Site in 2004, it is one of only two pilgrimages globally to receive that status, alongside Spain’s Way of St James." - SilverKris
