"After careful and creative restorations by Openhouse Studio, this villa on the cliffs overlooking San Sebastián is reincarnated as a charming boutique hotel that’s both coolly modern and deeply rooted in the past. Mendi Argia means “illuminated mountain” in Basque, and there’s indeed a warm glow to the place, especially when the afternoon sunshine spills into the hotel’s elegant interiors. The original wooden staircase remains, as do antique stone archways and a pelota court in the garden. But the rooms, though quietly understated, are as stylish as can be — think Gervasoni chairs, oak writing desks, BC2 wall lamps, and a Japanese-style black marble bathtub.
