My husband and I went to Epi's for our 5-year anniversary after hearing so many great things about it. We knew it would be a bit pricey but were looking forward to the experience and the food. Unfortunately, we left disappointed.
We had reservations and were seated immediately, which was nice, but we were surprised by how loud it was in such a small space, it felt a bit overwhelming. The service, however, was excellent. Our server was attentive and kind, which we truly appreciated. Sadly, the food didn't live up to the hype.
We ordered an amber beer ($7) and a vanilla soda ($4.50), the Croquetas de Jamón ($16) for an appetizer, and for our main courses, the Meatballs ($32) and Smothered Garlic Chicken ($32). Each entrée came with fries, a choice of soup (mushroom or bean), salad, and rice.
The fries were decent but overly salty. My husband chose the bean soup, which unfortunately tasted like it came straight from a can of beans, bland and unseasoned. I had the mushroom soup, which was a little better but still overly salty, and I usually like salty foods. The croquetas were rich, very salty as well, but passable. Oddly enough, the plain side salad was the highlight of the meal, fresh and paired with a really tasty dressing.
As for the entrées: the meatballs were underwhelming, tasting like plain, unseasoned meatballs in a basic red sauce. The accompanying rice on both plates tasted like a frozen microwave rice and veggie blend from the grocery store. My chicken dish was extremely rich and salty, I only managed a few bites before deciding I was done.
While the food wasn’t awful, it was far from memorable, especially given the price. I was also disappointed with the presentation, everything was served very plainly and didn't look particularly appetizing as you can see from the photos. Our total came to $125 with tip, and we decided to skip dessert after the disappointing entrees.
All in all, I’m glad we tried Epi’s once, but I wouldn’t recommend it and don’t plan to return. For the cost and all the hype, I expected far better quality and flavor.
