Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Boston | Eater Boston

"Kids can dig into a mini French feast at Ma Maison, where the menu for les petits includes kid-sized burgers, small cuts of steak, fish sticks with steamed broccoli, and more. The cherry on top? The restaurant donates all of the revenue from the kids menu to the nonprofit Chefs Feed Kids, which supports underprivileged children in the Philippines." - Erika Adams

The Best Restaurants In Beacon Hill 2024

"We almost don’t want to tell anybody about this incredible French restaurant. But, alas, that’s our job. The homey corner bistro with white linen on the tables serves classics like escargot, chicken coq au vin, and duck magret with cherries. While the food is fancy, the room stays pretty casual—you can roll up in jeans (but maybe leave the Bruins jersey at home), sit under a ceiling fan, and relax while Grand Marnier is poured onto the souffle you’re about to make disappear." - tanya edwards

"Chef Jacky Robert’s Cambridge Street joint, located on the edge of Beacon Hill and the West End, offers French classics like coq au vin and Provençal-style frog’s legs. Ma Maison also doesn’t shy away from organ meats, serving calf’s liver on the regular menu as well as a few weekly specials, such as sweetbreads on Wednesdays." - Celina Colby

Ma Maison is an old school French restaurant, nothing innovative just the usual favorites. I had the walnut, cherry and romaine salad, the lobster bisque and the mussels. The salad was terrific, loved the dressing. The lobster bisque was good with plenty of lobster. The mussels were very plump, very good.

I had an exceptional dinner. A dinner of French classics were perfectly executed. Foie gras with rhubarb sauce had a perfect blend of rich, sweet and sour flavors. The French onion soup was rich and satisfying. The frog legs were bursting with flavor and in a pleasantly crunchy coating. Deserts looked good, but we were too full to try them.

If you’re looking for a place that does classic French cuisine with care and consistency, this is it. They know how to cook a steak perfectly—flavorful, tender, and exactly how you order it. The menu is thoughtfully curated, with just enough variety to keep things interesting without overwhelming you. One highlight that really stands out is the flavored champagne. It’s a fun, unexpected touch that elevates the whole experience—refreshing and just the right balance of sweetness. And whatever you do, don’t skip dessert. The Grand Marnier soufflé is a showstopper: light, fluffy, with that warm, boozy orange flavor that hits all the right notes. It’s the perfect way to end the evening. The space itself is on the smaller side, so it feels more intimate than your typical restaurant—almost like dining in someone’s upscale home. It can get a little tight, especially during peak hours, but that’s part of the charm. Parking can be a bit of a hassle if you’re not familiar with the area. Street parking is limited, so I’d suggest heading straight for the paid lot a few blocks away—it’s worth it for a smoother experience. Whether you’re out for a romantic date night, celebrating something special, or just want a great meal in a cozy setting, Ma Maison delivers. It’s one of those places you’ll find yourself recommending again and again.

I bucked up and tried the kidney. It turned out to be kinda good. I've always wanted to try it since reading Ulysses. Wife got the lamb shank, it was amazing. The souffles for dessert were perfect, everything was spot on.

I was visiting for a few days and felt like French food—this spot did not disappoint. The food and service were both great. Highly recommend the steak frites, escargot, and the Grand Marnier soufflé. Everything was on point.

Google
I ordered a cocktail (good) and two food items (awful). This “French” restaurant should be ashamed. No restaurant in France at their price point would serve this quality of food. The endive salad was rotten endive (and not much of it) shown in pic browned and wilted, two slices of overripe borderline rotten tomato, two slices of uncored brown apple, and an enormous hunk of Brie cheese that no one eats that’s way. Absolutely gross and inedible. The pate is a massive brick of mediocre pate with 3 tiny pickles and a dollop of mustard. Nothing else. Huge hunk of meat and nothing else. What do I eat this with? Just meat?? Never received a pate platter like that in France or here. Completely unacceptable for any restaurant but if this owner has set foot in France, maybe revisit. If the owner is from France they know better. This was such such a disappointment an absolute waste of money. I walked out having eaten nothing and had to go to a nearby pub: and in 48 years of various bad meals I’ve never felt inclined to leave a bad review, but this really upset me.

Google
Ma Maison 🇫🇷 in Beacon Hill is top tier! ✨ I had the best French onion soup and the escargots were to die for 🐌. The atmosphere is so romantic and cozy, perfect for a special occasion or just a fancy weeknight dinner. Definitely check it out if you're in Boston 🏙️. #MaMaison #BeaconHill

Google
I can’t wait to be back in Boston just to eat here again. We were so impressed with the food, service, and atmosphere. With all the noise of the city, this place was so calm on a Saturday afternoon. No music so You can eat in peace. The baguette was crunchy on the outside yet soft in the inside. The butter was very savory. We had French toast with blueberries and it was so unique and perfect. Nothing like the American version. We also had Lobster soup, a little fishy for my liking but not bad. Lastly, the servers and host were so attentive in making sure we always had water in our cups without having to ask. Also many of the workers speak French so that was cool to hear or if you want to practice speaking. This is the closest you’ll get to France in Boston.

Yelp
Oh my word! This place is amazing - so amazing that I wish they had a location near where we live! The location is small so tables closer to each other, but the service and ambiance makes it feel cozy and warm. We made reservations which I recommend you do before hand. We started with escargots which were large, plump and garlicky. Tasty with the warm loaf of French bread they served. Hubs also wanted the steak tartare and this was THE BEST he's ever had! If it's on the menu, he'll order it so he's had a lot of steak tartares. For dinner he chose the lamb which was juicy and deliciously prepared! I ordered the Dover Sole which was buttery, flakey and fresh. The dessert was really why I chose Ma Maison (aside from the Dover Sole)! We ordered the Grand Marnier Soufflé and made the mistake of ordering just one because we were both so, so sad when we reached the bottom! We wanted more so we decided to try the chocolate soufflé. After another patient wait (because it's made fresh to order), we dove into it. It's fluffy and good, but certainly wasn't the Grand Marnier soufflé! That first soufflé was light, fluffy, sweet and pillowy. It was delicious bite after bite! I'm still thinking about it and wish I can find something even partially as good as this one at home near Chicago. When we return to Boston, this will always be our MUST dine at place for the steak tartare, Dover Sole and Grand Marnier soufflé.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant and not necessarily the food. I am from out of town and found this charming French bistro-like restaurant in Beacon Hill online. I made a future reservation and was looking forward to having dinner here for my final night in Boston. Unfortunately, we were not prepared for the traffic congestion or one-way resident only parking streets around the restaurant. I contacted the restaurant that we were running late and trying to find parking. I was told that they validated parking at the Charles Street garage for $15, which we proceeded to get to and would be at the restaurant shortly. When we arrived at the restaurant, I found the restaurant to be much smaller than anticipated, and tables were almost on top of one another. I didn't see any open tables as the diners were pretty packed in. When I checked in with the hostess, I discovered that they had given my reserved table away because I didn't show up on time. She indicated that she would have a table opened up in 20 minutes that were on dessert. Frustrated that they didn't hold my reservation and the restaurant was overpacked and hot, I declined to wait and went elsewhere. Maybe the locals are more knowledgeable on how to maneuver in the area, but the lack of empathy for an out of towner was annoying. As a frequent visitor to France, I am sorry that I was not able to experience chef Jacky Robert's spin on the French classics, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Out of towners beware!!!

Yelp
Feeling French (: I would go here again if I was in the mood for French food and if I was in the Beacon Hill area of Boston. My friends and I got the cutest corner, window table. The restau' had major French vibes with the French speaking staff, small tables, smells of yummy sauces and scenes of celebration and people in deep conversations. The food was simple yet elegant and derricious!!! Bread was brought to the table. We ordered the scallop entree, quail appetizer, beet salad, French onion soup and braised short ribs. The sauces on all the dishes to die for. Definitely make a reservation if coming here. We were there on a Sunday night at 8pm and it was packed . We were celebrating someone's Burfday so we brought our own cake and they provided plating services. Ready to go Ma Maison again today!!!

Yelp
All the yummy escargot!! Took my boyfriend here to celebrate his bday and we had an amazing dinner with all the bells and whistles. The restaurant is super cute and intimate. I really like the silver dishes and plates hanging on the walls and the cute snail figurines that are spread thought-out the restaurant. Since it was a special occasion we decided to get a whole bottle of French wine to share. It was very good and at a reasonable price! We wanted some appetizers and the very nice and attentive waiter suggested their butternut squash soup and we went with that. We were also super curios about the escargot in the menu because neither of us had never tried it and decided to go for it. We also wanted a small salad to share and they had a few to choose from. The soup was amazing! It was super creamy and buttery and rich and it really hit the spot especially on that rainy night. But the escargot! OMG! so good! They were literal bombs of garlic and butter in my mouth! I could of eaten a bucket of them! I would definitely get them again especially at a French restaurant. For our entrees we ordered the duck liver and duck breast. Both were very good and came with hearty sides. To close out the night we each got a coffee and since the restaurant knew it was my boyfriends bday they brought out a slice of delicious cake with a candle for him which was so nice! We will definite be treating ourselves to Ma Maison's again.

Yelp
This is my second time I have gone here and they did not disappoint! The portion sizes are large, so everyone had left overs. The quality and flavor of the food was excellent. I ordered the oysters, the escargot, and the oysters. My husband ordered a beef dish and a couple of our friends ordered the coq au vin. I would definitely come back again! We went here on a Thursday night and it was packed, so highly recommend a reservation.

Yelp
Everything we had was delicious. The lobster bisque soup and French onion were both good, the entrees were superb. They lost a star in the declining quality of service throughout our meal. Waiter was super friendly but the check up and follow through were infrequent and delayed. At some point even the manager stepped in to help (maybe they were short staffed). The drinks took quite a while to come and our dessert order was messed up (they did correct it after I brought it to their attention though!). The place is small and gets busy so reservations are recommended.

Yelp
We just finished visiting a relative at Mass General and were looking for a lunch restaurant nearby. Look no further! Just across the road on Massachusetts is this lovely French bistro. Authentic to a T, with a wonderful lunch menu and an appealing wine selection, all wrapped in brick and decorated with classic touches. We did not have a reservation but fortunately there was a table for 2 available. We were greeted enthusiastically and seated promptly. Service was excellent throughout. The couple from Cognac next to us, speaking in French, is always a good indication that you're in the right place. We ordered a Sancerre and Rose along with escargot as a starter. Served with warm fresh bread it was a delicious start. My wife loved her smoked salmon on a croissant and I went with a traditional Croque Monsieur (ham and melted cheese). C'est magnifique! Go!

Yelp
Happened upon this spot on a weekday eve, and so glad we did - wonderful French food, great service and lovely ambiance. The slow baked salmon was a thick, generous portion, and nicely cooked - it was tender and the skin was crispy. The bacon and peas added great flavor. Tomato salad was lovely with perfectly ripe tomatoes and creamy soft goat cheese. Our server was very helpful, accurate and prompt, and the space is a warm cross of french bistro and Boston. We sat inside, but they also have a cute outdoor patio area. A nice classic French spot in Beacon Hill, close to the T.

Yelp
Nice restaurant with friendly, great service and the food was delicious. The seating inside is a bit tight but it wasn't super busy when we were there so it was fine. The complimentary French bread and whipped butter was good. I really enjoyed the tuna tartare as well. I was told the lentil cake was good, too.

Yelp
Great value. Home style authentic french with large servings, rather than the typical micro plates tasting menu style. Cozy restaurant. It gets loud, so be aware Apps. Foie gras, escargot, steak tar tar were all good 8/10 Main Veal chop. 7.5/10 would get an 8.5 but was overcooked. Had a tasty creamy mushroom sauce. The server was attentive. If they didn't overcook my veal I'd prob give a five, but four stars it is. I would come here again and probably will.

Yelp
Came here for our anniversary dinner on a trip to Boston, and was kinda disappointed. Ambiance/service: The ambiance and service were probably the redeeming points for me? Definitely a cute little date spot with moody lighting and homey-style decor. Our server was nice! I think there was confusion on the dessert for our celebration - we ended up getting two desserts (one we paid for) instead of the just one. Food: I'm really not sure if French cuisine just isn't in my palette or if it was an off night? Our reservation was around 8:15 so close to closing so maybe it was that? I've had escargot before, but this one tasted really really earthy - the garlic butter didn't do much to make up for it. The bread and butter both needed more flavor - I get simplicity to accentuate the ingredients, but it didn't taste like anything really. The French onion soup was almost lukewarm so it was a bit off putting. The entrees had similar tasting sauces but they were lacking depth - they kinda just tasted like straight wine with almost no other seasoning. The meat (both the beef and the chicken) were a little overcooked so we were chewing through. The best part of the meal was that we were together, celebrating. Even if the food wasn't good, the company was stellar. Would we have chosen a different restaurant? Yes, but you live and you learn!

Yelp
A very cute date spot! The restaurant is small so I would recommend making a reservation. The service and food were good, nothing blew us away but I'd definitely return. We had the escargot, lobster bisque, duck, veal, and the chocolate soufflé for dessert. The escargot was good and as expected! The lobster bisque had a good portion of lobster but tasted fishy. I wouldn't recommend getting it, not sure if it's always like that. I did enjoy the duck but it was not up to par with other French restaurants in Boston. The meat was cooked a perfect medium rare but the flavor was lacking a bit. The veal was good but I am not a veal fan so I cannot comment! The chocolate soufflé was the item I was most looking forward to. It was unfortunately a bit watery and the flavor was not a deep chocolate, more like a light milk chocolate. I've had plenty of soufflés so I will not be getting it here again! Overall, I would recommend coming here even though there were some misses. It seems like there are many other dishes to try!

Yelp
I've passed by this place so many times, but never stopped in for whatever reason. My friend had a birthday dinner here and it was the perfect spot for a more upscale dinner. When we arrived, the hostess was a bit curt with us, given there was some confusion with the reservation. The rest of the staff was very kind. Based on my entreé (Lamb Shank), I would have given this place 5 stars. The lamb was very tender and full of flavor. However, I think some of the other dishes were more deserving of a 4. If you're vegan/vegetarian, I wouldn't recommend this place, as your options will be pretty limited. I'd return again for a special occasion.

Yelp
Wow wow wow! Incredibly delicious food with a wonderful, cozy atmosphere. Perfect spot for a romantic date night. Got to the restaurant an hour before our reservation, and luckily there was a table available. The host was kind and promptly directed us to the open table. The restaurant was super lively. Everything on the menu looked so good, it was hard to choose. Ended up getting the french onion soup, lamb chop, and the pistachio napoleon. The soup was delicious, had thick cheese, and lots of onion; the flavors were so aromatic and delicious. The lamb chop was also extravagant. So tender, the meat was just falling off the bone. There was a nice tomato sauce with an array of vegetables. For dessert, I ordered the pistachio napoleon. The cream was quite thick, a bit too much for my taste. But my friend, a lover if pistachios, assured that it was perfect. The vanilla ice cream that accompanies the dessert helps to get the napoleon down the throat. Overall, this was a spectacular dining experience. Absolutely recommend, especially for a date night or special occasion. Amazing vibe, and incredible food!

Yelp
Simply incredible! I have never heard of Ma Maison, however, was brought here for my birthday dinner. Ever since dining here, I've been recommending to everyone. Walking into Ma Maison, you are welcomed by an intimate, dressy, & cultural atmosphere. I simply forgot I was in Boston. The hostess took us to our table & actually pulled the table out to create more room to get into the booth along the wall. It's the little things that matter! We started with a glass of red & one of the french cocktails. I believe the cocktail was Prosecco and a raspberry liquor. For food, we ordered the short rib and duck dishes. Just look how perfect these dishes were! Highlight was the potato sorta fried with the short rib. Unbelievable. Finished dinner with a chocolate soufflé and chocolate mousse that come paired with dessert liquor. Props to the chef & wonderful staff to creating such an authentic experience in Beacon Hill!

Yelp
Had a great birthday meal here! Everything we had was delicious, highly recommend! Standouts: I loved the chocolate mousse! So light and airy, and the Reese's pieces were such a nice textural contrast, but if you don't have a sweet tooth, probably skip it. I tried the scallops from a friend's plate and they were so fresh and tender! I completely devoured the steak tartare, I am a big fan of raw meat, and this just satisfied a craving. The heirloom tomato salad was such a surprise! It really balanced out the meal. It wasn't too busy when I went early afternoon on a Friday. There was outdoor seating, but I opted inside.

Yelp
Sweet and unpretentious classic bistro, solid menu with classics. Delivers comfort and pleasant service. It can feel a bit crowded inside but the vibes are good! Pro tip, sit near the window for good people watching.

Yelp
Oh, how I hate to write this review, as it can only make it more difficult to get a table here, but this wonderful little restaurant deserves the positive review. This was our first visit to Ma Maison, but it won't be our last - as it will cycle into our list of favorite restaurants for an upscale meal. Ma Maison is a comfortable restaurant, where everyone will feel welcome. The restaurant was full of a diverse group of happy diners. Folks ranged from a family with children, to business folks in blue blazers, to couples for a romantic dinner. Couples were both young and old, same-sex and opposite sex, and dress ranged from casual to an elegant black dress. You will feel welcome here. The food is magnificent. We were celebrating a wedding anniversary, so we wanted a special meal. The menu proclaimed the best French Onion soup in Boston, so we had to try it. It was stellar, but they offered a special cold cream of asparagus soup that was so spectacular that you might want to save the onion soup for the next visit. Our waiter, Milan, guided us through the menu, pointing us to the Slow Baked Salmon Fillet with Peas and Bacon, and the Boneless Short Ribs Bourguignon. Both were perfectly prepared and full of flavor. We finished the night with the Giant Profiterole with Hot Chocolate Fudge, which sent us home happy. Ma Maison is located on the foot of Beacon Hill, across the street from Massachusetts General Hospital. Not a great place to bring your car, but it's just two blocks from the Charles MGH Red Line station. Ma Maison is also reasonably priced. For a special meal (with drinks and dessert) and a generous tip, we walked away happy for $150.

Yelp
@mamaisonboston I don't normally post, but I have to give credit where credit is due. This is the best dining experience in my life! Everything I ate was the best bite I've ever had with unbelievably reasonable prices. From the moment you walk in, you could tell this place was authentic without trying to be too bougie for no reason. We were late to our reservation due to a difficult time finding parking but the hostess was so nice for saving our table. She even gave us a corner table when she didn't need to. The foie Gras was so rich and savory. The duck was the most tender duck I've ever had and the cherry sauce was the perfect condiment for it! I've never had a soufflé before and I'm so glad this was my first experience with the Grand Meiner Soufflé. Warm, fluffy, delicious. Could eat 5 of these. I have a new standard for French food and will be coming back very soon and very often!

Yelp
I wanted to stop in for oysters and a glass of wine before a flight, so came in at like 3 PM. Lady at the door was a little snooty about the whole thing (esp. bc I came in with my suitcase I guess) but didn't turn me away. Due to that first encounter I was pretty nervous about dining here, but felt welcomed by the wait staff and I'm glad I ultimately stayed because the food and ambience were awesome! Got a glass of sancerre -- coming from SF, I was astonished by the fishbowl-size serving of wine for my $$! So so worth it for the price, at the local wine bar in SF you'd get a glass half the size for the same price lol. So pleasantly surprised. Oysters were awesome as well. PLUS, complimentary baguette that came with the most delicious, savory butter. Super great meal! Everything on the menu looks delicious, and I'm sad I didn't have the appetite to try more stuff. I'll definitely stop in next time I'm in Boston and am a bit hungrier :-)

Yelp
Went to Ma Madison for a nice slow dinner before going to see comics come home. Very nice French dinner, portions were slightly small but service and ambiance was very nice. We opted for mussels, lobster bisque, French onion soup, mixed greens with goat cheese to start. For mains I had the scallop and the hubby had the frog legs and we had creamed spinach and ratatouille as sides. Everything was very nicely paced and did not feel rushed at all. Very full when we left and check came out to be right around $150. Would recommend for an intimate date night

Yelp
Delicious French bistro near North Station. I've eaten here twice and the food is great. Service was quick and the prices are fair. I am always happy to come back to Ma Maison.

Yelp
When visiting a French restaurant I have high expectations. The food tends to be exquisite and some dishes are here. The Foie Gras is amazing and so are all the deserts we tried. However the escargot which is something I always try at French restaurants was only ok. The service varies on who your server is as we had friends who came to the restaurant after we sat and we ordered before they even got their menus and yet they had their appetizers first. When looking for someone to call for a refill and even when we wanted the menus for desert, it is very difficult to catch anyone looking at your table as if each waiter will only look at their own table only. On the bright side they brought us water as soon as we sat and refilled it often. That is how I would get someone's attention...finish my water so someone could come by and I could ask for something. The place is very small and you will have to be a party of two and be lucky to get a table without a reservation, which is what happened with our friends..who came in a little after we sat and were hoping they could sit with us, but with such little space it seemed unlikely they would even be able to get a table but as they were asking a table for two was leaving. Its rather on the expensive side which can be understood with the quality of some of the dishes, however I would except everything to be great for these prices. Its a good place with potential to be great.

Yelp
I had great hopes for Ma Maison but it just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it was an off day, but the only parts of the meal I enjoyed was the wine and the bread. Although the rhubarb compote/sauce was delicious, the foie gras itself was just...not great. And I have no idea why the plate needed to be served at 400 degrees. My sausage entree was just... not good. I've never had sausage of this texture, it was like super blended purée and reminded me of when I put rabbit through my blender so that my dog doesn't choke on it. And it had a bizarre aftertaste. My friend did, however, enjoy her salmon very much. For desert we decided to splurge and got the chocolate soufflé and the napoleon. The soufflé was soggy, and their twist on the napoleon had hard wafer type layers instead of thin soft crepe-like layers. The best part was the scoop of ice cream- tasted home made and truly wonderful. The service was fine, but considering every plate they cleared was at least half full, I'm surprised no one said anything. Overall, the entire meal was a huge (and expensive) disappointment.

Yelp
I'm updated my previous review to a 5/5 as the service really improved the last time we came. Ma Maison is some of the best French food in Boston. Ambiance is Intimate, busy, and food is delicious. The escargot, mussels, duck, lamb chops, and dessert options are truly incredible. If you like this cuisine, don't miss out!

Yelp
A beautiful restaurant and a great place for brunch! There were lovely flowers and a nice lamp on our table and the interior has very French style decor. The service was also quite good. Baguette with butter: the color is light but the bread is crisp on the exterior and soft inside, pairing well with butter and soup French onion soup: deliciously cheesy with flavorful and rich soup, quite like the ones in Paris Beef tartare: a lot of beef with capers and mustard, paired with a very mustardy salad and thin bread crisps. Not my favorite because of how mustard forward everything was Croque madame: huge portion with the same mustardy salad and crisp fries - super heavy with the rest of our meal

Yelp
Unplanned Sunday lunch was fantastic! We were slipped in between those with reservations. We had two waiters who were friendly, professional, attentive, and efficient. New Brunswick oysters were fresh, petit, and pack with a sweet and buttery flavor. Shucked cleanly. The foie gras and baguette were expertly prepared and complemented with poached pear for an absolutely delicious combination. The lamb chops were grilled perfectly to medium rare and paired with a rich potato gratin. The mussels frites were an excellent match of a generous portion of flavorful mussels in a lovely white wine and onion sauce with light and crispy shoestring fries. The grand marnier soufflé capped an unexpectedly decadent meal. One of my favorite places in Boston.

Yelp
I came here for dinner today, and I was very impressed with the entire experience! My servers name was Julie and she was awesome! I came in alone for just an entrée and ended up getting a four course meal just because everything looked so good on the menu. I started off with the escargot and then moved on to the foie gras. Both of them were very good and they timed them extremely well so that when I finished one, the next one was out shortly after. For my entrée I got the duck Margret which was also very well done. The sauce accompanying it was amazing! I wish I could take it home with me. The place was busy so there was an issue firing up my entrée, but it wasn't a huge issue and they were very apologetic for slowing down the service I finished the night with an apple, tart and an espresso. I will say that I've never had an apple tart quite like that before and it was extremely good to the point that I'll probably come back at some point to just eat that again! The place is kind of small, but they have a good outdoor area, attentive service and overall a great atmosphere. I would suggest anyone in the area to check this place out!

Yelp
If I could give this restaurant no stars, I would. I'm now convinced that all the people who gave this place a good review have no idea how to cook at all, have never had authentic classical French food. I had dinner here as a treat, being an out of towner and was super excited to try this place. They were really busy so I was relieved I had a reservation. The hostess was extremely rude. Thankfully our server was kind and efficient. On the whole she gave us very decent service. Our party ate outside which was charming. The weather had been reasonably accommodating. The food however was an absolute nightmare! I honestly think that's an understatement. Please never eat here. I ordered the cream of butternut and french onion soup which were both tasteless, minus the cheese on the onion. For dinner, the steak with bernaise sauce and side of fries and the Ray Fin Entree. The bernaise sauce was inedible. It was thick and globby and piercing with the amount of vinegar that was added and was promptly scraped off the steak. The steak itself was fatty and chewy. The fries were fine. The ray fin was half burned. Only one half of it, not the whole thing. It was also like rubber. So here's where the culinary background knowledge came in. In case you are curious, that means that half my ray fin was cooked to order and the burned half was from someone else's plate that had also sent it back. They decided to pawn it off on me as I am sure they thought I wouldn't know the truth and to save on their food cost. I asked the server was a replacement but the staff refused saying "it will take an hour and a half, so give up and concentrate on dessert ". The rice that accompanied the dish was tasteless and the vegetables were also tasteless and undercooked, literally still hard. Sooooooo dessert. The chocolate soufflé was inedible. It was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside, please see picture. The apple tarte tatin was alright under I discovered under the apples and on top of the pastry a hair, please see picture. I believe our waitress genuinely felt bad at this point because she offered a free chocolate mousse and sparkling wine. The chocolate mousse was definitely from a box. Thank God for the wine! I drank all that was offered. If I hadn't I would have burst into tears from this terrible and very expensive experience!!

Yelp
Everything about this place was a 10/10! Came for a birthday celebration with my mom and it was wonderful. The ambiance is romantic and intimate. Because it isn't incredibly spacious inside, the noise can get on the slightly louder end but we were able to talk without raising our voices so it wasn't that bad. Definitely recommend getting a reservation as it gets packed even on weekday evenings. All of the food was amazing. We got the oysters, steak tartare (beef), duck and cabbage soup, duck entree and lamb shank. The steak tartare came with a small frisee side with dressing which was delicious mixed in with the tartare. I love French style roasted duck and this one did not disappoint. I ordered it medium rare and it came out perfectly cooked with a great sauce pairing. Everything was really great quality for the price you're paying. Highly recommend going for a date night or a small birthday celebration. All of the staff were very kind and attentive. Can't wait to go back again.

Yelp
Well executed French cuisine with reasonable prices. We came for brunch and entrees were around $16 per person before tax/tip. The bread served as a starter was well baked and crispy. I tried the French onion soup, and it was fairly decent, with a good amount of gruyere on top. The salmon benedict was truly enjoyable - the English muffin was perfectly crisped, and the Hollandaise sauce was velvety smooth. The poached egg was cooked perfectly, and the accompanying salad and fries were excellent as well. The only minor feedback for the benedict was that the Hollandaise sauce needed a bit more lemon juice for a bit of brightness. But overall, a great French place for brunch at very reasonable prices for the Boston area.

Yelp
Been living in neighborhood for over a year and never thought to try this place. It was fantastic! Everything was fresh, simple, and good. We came Friday for brunch and it was fairly empty with some locals. Service was quick and friendly. It was a quiet nice place for brunch. Want to try dinner next!

Yelp
My friend made reservations at 8:45 on a Saturday night. We arrived slightly late, but that was not a problem as they were still in the process of finishing up with the table prior to us. We got seated in a quaint and cute ambience. Tables were pretty close together which was reminiscent of France itself. For an appetizer, we share the chunky duck and cabbage soup. It was a perfect starter for our meal, and the bowl was just enough to share between two people. They even offered us a small second bowl so that we could split it. It was slightly fatty in a clear broth. Entrees consisted of the lamb shank and veal. Both were served on the bone which provided even more flavor than without. The mushroom cream sauce with the veal was to die for, coming from a sucker for mushrooms. The reduction with the lamb over the couscous was divine. I preferred the lamb over the veal as it was more tender and moist, but both were great. Since we weren't too sure for a red choice of wine, we asked our kind waitress for her recommendation based on what we had intended to order. She was more than happy to ask the Chef who suggested the Plan de dieu which was slightly sweet and dry, perfect for the meal. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and would love to take my family and friends here as well. Can't recommend it more!

Yelp
Tiny spot, would recommend a reservation before you go. Came here on a Sunday for lunch at 1:30, place is cute. We had a reservation for 4 but still waited about 15 minutes. They had outdoor seating but it was a bit chilly. Food: Endive salad with Brie, French Onion Soup, Escargot, Croque Maison (salad), Tomato Salad, Chicken Coq Au Vin, Duck Confit, Pomme Fritas, Dessert Grand Marnier Soufflé and pairings with carafs of Bourdeaux. Food was excellent. Portions were big, not petite as expected of French cuisine. We enjoyed our meal. Servers as like others have noted, weren't the best. Not one smile, however, ours did keep checking up on us to see if we liked our food, water glasses kept being topped, so they did their job. I would go back for authentic French cuisine but not for happy go lucky staff.

Yelp
This was the perfect place. The food was delicious and the server made excellent recommendations for our party. We ordered about everything she suggested and it was all delicious and well priced. French restaurants can be intimidating but this bistro was anything but. The restaurant was gorgeous inside and everyone who worked there was very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I'm so glad I came here to eat. It's on the corner between Cambridge and Anderson so it's close to Beacon Hill via walking. We made a reservation for 8:45pm on a Thursday night and it was jam packed! Definitely recommend a reservation, which is super easy via OpenTable. Let's get to the meat of it though. For starters we ordered the foie gras, escargot, and French onion soup. The soup really is warming and who can say no to caramelized onion? Foie gras is a first for me, it's very fatty and rich. Honestly, I couldn't have finished without the pear served alongside it. The escargot is so good, parsley and butter is a delicious way to pair something that is unfamiliar. I loved it! Apparently this dish to serve it is what they do in France as well, so very classic French methodology. My boyfriend ordered the lamb shank with ratatouille and it was delicious. Though not as delicious as my duck magret! The ratatouille definitely had some eggplant in there, a rich flavor mixed with all the mushrooms and veggies. We weren't too big of a fan of the Merguez Sausage with the lamb but it has a very unique flavor to it. My duck was so beautiful, medium rare and still that duck flavor and fat. The orange sauce with the duck was so good, my boyfriend kept dipping his lamb into it! Finishing off the meal, we had the pear custard. It's soft, warm, with a lovely scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. A delightful way to finish off a lovely French meal.

Yelp
The servicer was wonderful. The table bread was not great. The food was okay. Was not our favorite. The drink were alright, a bit too sweet. The ambiance was great. I would recommend taking the red line because it is very close to Charles/MGH.

Yelp
A cute French restaurant in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood - smaller than I expected (read: cosier?) but not too cramped. We had reservations for 12:15 on a Sunday, and when we arrived the restaurant was around half-full; we were seated shortly after they cleared off our table. For my main I ordered the short rib bourguignon and my friend had the salmon filet. Beef was quite heavy - the sauce was a bit too salty/heavy for my taste, and the beef was slightly dry and chewy. Portion sizes were massive (perhaps commensurate for the price, although I would have preferred a smaller meal at a lower price). The potato croquette was tasty - nicely crispy exterior with tasty mashed potatoes on the inside. It's surprisingly large so a bit difficult to eat without it disintegrating haha. The salmon was not bad, too, although definitely on the heavy side (and same large portion size, too). All in all, an OK experience. I think I'd be keen to visit again, but I'd probably order something lighter next time (a croque maison or something; seemed to be quite tasty looking around at neighbouring tables).

Yelp
Probably my favorite restaurant in the Beacon Hill area so far! I think Ma Maison is quickly becoming my go-to spot. Living in Beacon Hill has a lot of associations, but the one thing that comes up a lot is the cost. Everything around here is so dang expensive, and for a restaurant that has the quality, service, and atmosphere like Ma Maison at a reasonable price, it's quite the gem. A favorite of mine is the endive salad, which is deceptively simple looking, but works incredibly well. The bitterness of the salad leaves, brie cheese, candied cherries, it's a beautiful dish that doesn't hide behind anything, and really showcases the quality of stuff they're using. And can't forget about the bread they serve, smells amazing, tastes wonderful, and comes with some really great butter. My girlfriend doesn't really enjoy beef as much, but the bourguignon converted her. Super soft, flavorful, and surprisingly not too heavy. The duck that I had was also cooked beautifully. For desserts, we've gotten the crepe suzettes so far, but I think there may be a day where we want to just go through the menu. Everything is simple, high quality, and honest, and I think the last point is why I love this place so much.

Yelp
Ma Maison was spectacular! They have managed to bring the best traditional French fare to Boston we have found. The French onion soup came out piping hot, was cheesy and rich, but at the same time felt light and not too filling. Highly recommend as a starter. We had the chicken coq au vain for a main which was just a tad over salted, but the butter noodles and red wine reduction base were to die for. Finished things off with the chocolate soufflé with a pour over chocolate sauce. In our opinion, there is no other way to cap off such a special meal. Appetizers: 1. French onion soup - 5/5 Main: 1. Chicken coq au vain - 4/5 2. Ratatouille - 4/5 Desert: 1. Chocolate Soufflé - 5/5

Yelp
We love this restaurant! One of the few true French bistros in Boston area. Came here tonight for my mother's 92nd birthday. She has been here for her birthday the last four years in a row since moving here from Seattle, she loves it and so do we! The service was impeccable! They kindly brought a small champagne toast for her big day, and everything after that was extremely snappy. Escargot and onion soup apps were excellent. Bourginon entrees were outstanding, great depth of flavor. My mother had liver and onions. Not sure it would have been on my list of things to order, but that is one reason why she LOVES coming here! Giant profiterole for dessert is the best ever. The food, the menu, the ambiance, the kindness, all reasons why this is a truly standout restaurant for all ages. Thank you Ma Maison for making my mother's birthday a wonderfully enjoyable meal! God willing we will be back next year!

Yelp
Really good food! Everything was cooked well. The food was comforting and it makes you all happy and warm. I loved the chicken crepes, and their bread was so good with butter and the lobster bisque had plenty of lobster. The scallops were well done, and I like their fries. Not too crazy about their soufflé but that's just me. Good service and it's a cute little chill place!

Yelp
This is my mom's favorite French Restaurant so we came here for dinner yesterday. We ordered Foie gras, escargot, lobster bisque, Duck Magret a l'orange with brussel sprouts, Cod Fillet with Mushroom Cream Sauce and Fresh Truffles, and lastly chocolate and grand marnier soufflés. Everything was delicious and full of flavor. I think my favorite part was the chocolate souffle, Im more a sweet person lol. I was a little disappointed with my cod presentation, it looked like throw up on my plate and I was not happy with it at all. I could not even post the picture... Service was really good, our waitress came just about on time with every change of course. We did not have to ask her to refill or take away anything even though she had like 8 other tables to attend to! She was really good, I wish I got her name. The down side about this place is how small it was and the seating is kind of tight like the North End restaurants. So don't bring too much here because there won't be much room to put anything. Overall, 8/10

Yelp
Food was great: decently seasoned, comforting and filling. Service was good, we walked in and got seats during a snow storm. For ambiance, I can see this place being cute for a dinner date :)

Yelp
LOVED THIS PLACE! By far my favorite French brasserie in Boston. It feels like you're in a cozy cafe in France. I came here for my birthday and received a complimentary lemon tart, the best one I've eaten so far.

Yelp
It was okay... not bad but not great either. Staff were a bit pushy on getting us to order, eat and leave.

Yelp
I had dinner on a Saturday two weeks ago and everything was great. Tonight was another story. We ordered and our waiter was distracted and forgot our order. He came back and said so, so no big deal. We ordered a bottle of wine and the tomato soup to start. The wine was good for the price and the soup was very good. My wife ordered the duck and I the steak and frites. The food arrived and my wifes was slighly overcooked but acceptable. My steak was ordered rare and came out medium well. I returned the steak and my new steak comes out after my wife is finished with her meal and it's medium plus. I return the steak and just want to go home and grab a sandwich. The manager or I assume is a manager shows me a rare steak and shoves it at me saying this is what I returned. Maybe the kitchen cooked another steak to show her but it was not what I was served. She was the rudest individual and should not be in customer service. I can only assume the kitchen is afraid of her. I would like to add that I returned because I had a good experience the first time but the manager is a $&@&$ on another level. Kitchen's can have a bad night but she needs to find another profession.
