Gruene Mansion Inn

"Why did this hotel catch your attention?A white wrought iron fence and giant oak trees surround the original white Victorian mansion built in 1872, with intricate arching designs and a turret. Because the hotel was formerly a residence, walking the brick path up to the large porch feels like you’re entering someone’s stately Southern home. All of the Inn’s buildings are restored barns and homes (at least a century old) with a design that melds Texas cabin with antique Victorian, including the pale egg yolk yellow lobby with warm wood floors, a Persian rug, black leather armchairs, and an antique chandelier. What's the backstory? The Inn’s Mansion was originally built for the town’s founder, Henry D. Gruene, right above the Guadalupe River, but the property has since added old barns, a Corn Crib, Carriage House, and several other historic buildings to expand on the 33 rooms in the Mansion. Because it’s within a short walk of Gruene Hall, famous guests like Willie Nelson and Leann Rimes have booked stays over the years. Tell us all about the rooms.Although every cozy room has a private porch, the ones overlooking the river are the true gems: Hayloft, Das Fluss Haus #12, and the River Tree Loft. Walls are covered in deep brown barn wood and cattle or horse artwork, and ceilings have shiplap. But glass doorknobs, metal tile and mouldings, and clawfoot tubs give each room that vintage Victorian vibe. Brown leather furniture and Persian rugs add homey accents that make you want to hole up in here for the weekend. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Breakfast is included with a spread of fruit, pastries, and muffins along with hot items like scrambled eggs and comfort foods such as pigs in a blanket. How was the service?Staff are friendly and welcoming. They’re going out of their way to accommodate guests, including the many couples who stay here and enjoy the different romantic gift baskets. What type of travelers will you find here?Younger city couples looking for a romantic getaway as well as small groups of girlfriends on a weekend trip. Think cowboy boots and hats, breezy linen dresses in summer, and denim that’s trendy but not too hipster. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in?The Inn is a landmark in the area and has been since the town’s inception. It fits within the old-world style of Gruene, and is within walking distance to all the must-dos in town. Any other hotel features worth noting? The Inn has adorable gift baskets available that are geared toward couples with wine, fruit, and snacks. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?Staying at this historic Inn with Texas Victorian charm gives the best of what Gruene has to offer in an atmosphere that’s romantic and relaxed. It highlights the quaint bed-and-breakfast feel alongside the lively downtown live music scene." - Mandy Ellis
