"How did it strike you on arrival?Donna Camilla Savelli Hotel isn’t the newest, or the most modern, hotel—but when you see the grand old 16th-century monastery it’s in, any desire for cutting-edge design goes out the window. The owners have kept many of the original details, like the old tabernacle at the top of the smooth stone steps leading into the black-and-white-tiled dining area. There are frescos on the ceiling, and a wonderful labyrinthine design: guests can wander into the original chapel, or head outside into a peaceful, shaded courtyard. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Everyone from families to couples to solo travelers stay here, united in their desire to be in a buzzy neighborhood, Trastevere, and have the opportunity to sleep in a grand old monastery. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The Junior Suite is traditional but tasteful, with thick velvet drapes over dark wood vanities, plush velvet chairs, and a floral bedhead. The ceiling still has its original exposed wooden beams, and the tiled floors are wonderful and cool underfoot. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathroom’s big and marble, and filled with soft towels and robes, plus matching slippers for cooler evenings. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is free, and the connection is good—even in the garden. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.If you’re coming by car, the property's free parking is invaluable in busy Rome, and the in-room smartphone with free internet lets you call much of Europe, and even China, for free. Oh, and the digital city guide makes navigating the city a cinch. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The location, in the heart of Trastevere, is superb—within walking distance to the sights, but far enough away from the touristy areas to be restful come nightfall. There are loads of great restaurants and bars nearby, mostly frequented by locals." - Maresa Manara
