Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? Moxy, Marriott's playful millennial brand, gives Tokyo a whirl in a decidedly un-touristy part of town. The building's exterior may be thoroughly nondescript—save for the logo's signature swoosh—but the interior contains all the trappings of a fun-spirited boutique hotel. What's the backstory? Get ready to cash in those Bonvoy points: The Moxy is part of a tidal wave of international imports landing in Japan. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? Value is the driving factor here, so entry-level rooms are minimal both in size and decor. To make up for it, the kindly staff espouses a "maximize your time in Tokyo" motto. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? There's a whimsical rotary phone in each room but don't worry: The wi-fi is free and fast. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Continental breakfast and takeaway snacks help guests get out and explore the city. But when you're done for the day there's a cozy, dimly lit bar on site for a casual hang with friends. And the service? Staff strikes a good balance between the professionalism that comes with Japanese hospitality and the friendliness that's often expected by international travelers. What type of travelers will you find here? Travelers who'd rather spend their hard-earned money on interesting eats instead of an upgrade to a W. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? Cheap sleeps with a high-comfort factor mean you won't be crashing in the city's hippest neighborhood. Kinshicho isn't whispered about with the same hushed tones as Aoyama or Naka-Meguro; rather, you're in an interstitial district between the electric lights of Akihabara and the strange future-city of Odaiba. But the blend of old wooden homes and newish towers is a delight to behold. Is there anything you'd change? Nope. Any other hotel features worth noting? A 24-hour fitness room is a great way to sweat off the jet lag. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? You can't beat the price if you're searching for a vetted stay at a certain international standard." - Brandon Presser
