Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru
"The second of two Four Seasons properties in the Maldives (the first is on Kuda Huraa Island in Mal Atoll) goes to great lengths to respect its stunning natural surroundings. The 102 thatched beach and water bungalows and villas, bigger and more expansive than accommodations elsewhere in the islands, are ingeniously integrated into lush jungle, garden, and sand. Two long stretches of untouched beaches line the 44-acre island, all nestled within a 1 1/2-mile long lagoon. At this scale, it doesn't feel as crowded as other resorts, and the bungalows -- most ensconced in gated enclosures, are more private than elsewhere. A somewhat older crowd -- wealthy retirees, second honeymooners, families -- come here to spread out a little. This island is farther flung than most, but the 35-minute flight by seaplane from Mal gives a spectacular view of the atolls at 5000 feet. Divers and others can enhance their stay on The Explorer, the luxury live-aboard catamaran that caters to both Four Seasons's resorts. The extensive Marine Research Centre, with many much needed preservation projects underway, will appeal to nature lovers. Xenophiles can visit nearby inhabited islands to see a real-live Maldivian village, which may be their one chance to experience local culture."
