"When Louis Trevino and Vincent Medina opened Cafe Ohlone in 2019 as a pop-up to celebrate their Indigenous identities, it was the first of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area and, the duo says, in the world. They opened a permanent restaurant and education space at the Hearst Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley in 2022, and now plan to acquire land in the East Bay to raise native gardens and create three interconnected restaurant spaces. With a $5 million fundraising goal, they envision a sunlit tea room, a wooden speakeasy‑esque lounge in a wooden slat‑house casita, and a main dining room inside a grand, thatched tule house, with trails between the spaces and additional acreage for community members to cultivate basketry materials and raise flora including poppies and mugwort; they hope to acquire 40 acres by 2024." - Paolo Bicchieri
