"Opening this spring at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa on San Diego Bay near the Coronado Ferry Landing, the uniquely-named ALBACA will be the property's new signature restaurant serving California cuisine. I learned it will incorporate the backgrounds of the hotel’s new executive chef Rafael Corniel, who was born in the Dominican Republic, and the Mexican heritage of chef Aaron Obregon — whose past culinary experience includes the seafood-focused Beerfish and Bay Park Fish Co.; Obregon joined the property in 2017 while Corniel was the senior banquet chef at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, and Corniel replaces former executive chef Michael Poompan. Their seasonal menu will draw heavily from coastal waters, employing seafood from Southern California and Baja and using local produce in dishes influenced by Latin and Baja cuisines, and the dining space is designed for indoor and outdoor seating with a large patio and fire pits." - Candice Woo
