"A second location of Dana Salls Cree’s beloved Logan Square frozen-dessert shop is set to open mid-October at 709 W. Belden Avenue after pandemic-related equipment delays. The Lincoln Park outpost will initially offer the same menu as the original — with all pops made in Logan Square and transported over — though the owner hopes to develop a few shop-specific pops eventually. Both locations will roll out a new line of ice cream sandwiches (starting with chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream) along with seasonal treats, including a Halloween “I Scream” sandwich that looks like a bloody eyeball and trick-or-treat pops inspired by Nerds and Snickers. The compact 700-square-foot space will serve customers via a walk-up window only for now to maintain social distancing and avoid asking children to remove masks indoors. Design touches from the original — stadium seating, popsicle-shaped doors and animal murals — return here in a peach-and-gray color scheme, plus a Sparkle & Supply mural that incorporates real sprinkles. Salls Cree, a respected pastry chef who worked at Publican and Blackbird and who opened the first shop in 2018 with Bang Bang Pies’ Michael Ciapciak, has also expanded distribution to retailers like Foxtrot and select restaurants. To mark the brand’s third anniversary, the first 200 visitors on opening day will receive a free birthday cake ice cream pop, and the owner notes there are even a few leftover novelty CM Punk ice cream bars at the original location." - Aimee Levitt
