"Born out of a pandemic takeout idea from fine-dining alum Johnny Burke, this Italian counter-service spot at 297 Main Street (at Sullivan Street) is a sunny, takeout-and-delivery-only restaurant that highlights Detroit-style pizzas—rectangular, thick, spongy dough with sauce splattered on after toppings—baked in seasoned iron pans and topped with ingredients like chicken cutlets, crispy pepperoni cups, and even a pie with all the fixings of a Caesar salad. Pizzas are sold by the slice at lunch (11 a.m.–2 p.m.) or by the whole tray, and Burke says they pass the "cold test," remaining delicious after a night in the refrigerator. The menu, designed for takeout, also includes meatballs, mozzarella sticks, wings, subs, and salads; the shop has gigantic front windows so customers can peer inside despite there being no sit-down service. Burke developed the concept while his West Roxbury catering business stalled during the pandemic, having tested several takeout ideas, and he views Johnny Pomodoro as a pandemic-proof way to support his team; he’s pleased by local turnout and has plans to expand elsewhere in Boston. Johnny Pomodoro is open six days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (closed Mondays for now) and will move to seven days a week starting January 23." - Erika Adams
