"While sipping a Lagunitas at Joey Roses, I discovered a new Lower East Side dive-bar-turned-sandwich-shop (opened last fall) that quietly runs a serious sandwich program; the exterior is playfully RV-like and the interior even has a cassette-tape coffee table, but there’s little signage advertising food unless you follow their Instagram. Owner-slash-comedian Joe DeRosa admits he was looking for “another anxiety-inducing venture,” and the result is sandwiches that feel like a bargain in a city where $15 has become standard: most sandwiches (like the Rosie — mortadella, tomato, mayo, and hot cherries — and the Beefie — roast beef, provolone, sweet peppers, horseradish, and mayo) are $8, plus there’s a buy-two-get-one-free deal during happy hour (5–7 p.m. and 10 p.m.–midnight) so three sandwiches can run just $16. The sandwiches are generously packed and clearly made with care: the team bakes a ciabatta-y sub roll daily (a collaboration with the Stand Restaurant and Comedy Club), which is nicely chewy and sops up mayo and brine, and the menu sticks mostly to straightforward Italian-combo riffs (with one playful PB&J-with-chips exception). If you want the food without the dive atmosphere, the sandwiches can also be ordered to-go." - Emma Orlow
