"At the corner of Cass Avenue and Willis Street I noticed signs advertising positions for Cobb’s Corner, which is being revived this year in its original location in the Cass Corridor. I learned that Robert Cobb, who opened the original bar in 1970 as a casual spot for drinks and a hangout for bikers, sold it in 1979 to brothers Henry and Howard Normile; under Henry’s stewardship it was transformed into an up-and-coming destination for jazz music before Henry was shot and killed a year later on the foyer of his apartment next door in what obituaries say may have been a drug-related incident, after which the bar lost momentum and closed within a few years and the space housed a rotating set of retailers. Cobb confirmed to me he plans to reopen the bar in the spirit of the original with affordable drinks, bar food, and live music, seating roughly 70 patrons; records show he began applying for a liquor license transfer in 2016 and the bar is anticipated to open sometime in November. The reopening follows a broader revival of classic Detroit bars and clubs such as Willis Show Bar, Cliff Bell’s, and Kiesling." - Brenna Houck
