"Tucked into the former Soda Popinski’s space on the trolley car line at 1548 California Street, this new “micro club” from the Macondray team promises a disco dance party when Zhuzh opens on Friday, March 15. I learned that owners Aaron Paul, Jake Roberts, and Eric Passetti stripped the space to the studs and worked with designer Marissa Jade Marsh to create shiny, ground-down cement floors dusted with holographic glitter, a chandelier with seven rotating disco balls, custom floral wallpaper curving into the ceiling, neon flower outlines by Jim Rizzo, and a hand-stenciled hot-pink cheetah-print bathroom. The focus is drinks and dancing rather than food: a streamlined menu of six cocktails all on tap at a $15 flat price includes the Magic Wand (a spicy mezcal margarita with blood orange, makrut lime leaf, and serrano chile), the Genmaicha Matchatini (an espresso-martini–style drink that froths green tea with toasted rice notes), and the Paradise Garage (tropical rum with passionfruit, pineapple, tangerine, and apricot), with seasonal rotations such as a returning Bunny Poison when spring rhubarb arrives; California wine and Bay Area beer are also available, plus a few housemade pickles from Macondray’s kitchen. Seating is limited—a pistachio-green booth with a spinning Lazy Susan for bottle service, 19 bar stools, and four tall café tables—but the centerpiece is the dance floor and DJ booth, where DJs will spin daily on an Italian RCF sound system. Hours will be Monday–Friday 4 p.m.–2 a.m. and Saturday–Sunday 2 p.m.–2 a.m." - Becky Duffett
