"I learned that Moorenko’s, a Maryland-based ice cream brand known locally for extravagantly rich and creamy flavors, has signed a lease at 720 C Street SE in Eastern Market and hopes to begin operating this summer in a 722-square-foot space that recently housed a Trickling Springs Creamery store. They source dairy from grass-fed cows raised on family-owned Pennsylvania farms and plan to serve "ultra-premium" ice cream and sorbets (their ice cream contains 17 percent milk fat), milkshakes, French-pressed coffee, and craft sodas, with flavors that include cherry stracciatella, salted caramel with pralines, and cookie overload. Founder Susan Soorenko studied under ice cream experts in New York and a master gelato maker in Italy before debuting the brand in 2002; her Silver Spring and Ellicott City stores reopened this month with limited hours (noon to 6 p.m., Friday to Sunday), and the ice cream is also sold at specialty grocers across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. COVID-19 restrictions at the new location will include mask requirements, a limited number of customers in the store at a time, and no seating, and the products are advertised as handmade, ultra-premium, and rBST-free." - Tierney Plumb
