"A new restaurant from a duo of first-time owners is taking over the former Otaez Mexican Restaurant space at 1619 Webster Street in Alameda and plans to open by mid October. The menu, described by chef Juan Jaquez as New American with global influences, will feature ceviche, risotto, fresh pasta, a braised short rib in mole, and sous vide Spanish octopus, with a full bar offering beer, wine, and cocktails and weekend brunch service. Jaquez, who grew up in Fruitvale and was born in Mexico, brings more than a decade of experience from Paradiso in San Leandro and earlier time in the kitchen at Boulevard in San Francisco; he says the pandemic prompted him to rethink his career, leading him from selling food from his home to partnering with friend Vicente Ceron to open this restaurant. The team flipped the space at breakneck pace after Otaez closed at the end of June—helped by Ceron's construction company—and says they were drawn to the location for its good bones and a good deal; they plan to be open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch, dinner, and brunch and are aiming for a mid-October opening (follow Ceron Kitchen on social media for updates)." - Lauren Saria
