"Opening next to the Lachine Canal in Pointe‑St‑Charles on Saturday, April 14, the new microbrewery 4 Origines Microbrasserie is a passion project by Michael D’Ornellas, Keegan Kelertas and Benjamin Somers, joined by head brewer Braden Richards from Brasseur de Montréal. I learned that D’Ornellas — who started brewing seven years ago after buying a home‑brew kit, built his beer knowledge from a library of beer books, and drew a following through home‑brewing competitions — spent two years on brand development and two years securing and readying the industrial space, which has a warehouse feel with 32‑foot‑high ceilings and a boutique selling merchandise and beer (starting in May). The taproom, which will eventually have 12 on‑tap offerings including two non‑alcoholic kombucha options, opens the debut with four beers: Apriknot, a tea‑and‑apricot pale ale made for a wedding that is aromatic without the cloying sweetness of some fruit beers; Ironworks, a golden ale described as a tribute to the working man or woman — a sessionable, poundable “layman’s” beer ideal for a terrasse in summer; the Crumpet, an English ale likened to Newcastle Brown Ale (crisp and not heavy); and either a coffee stout or a session IPA. I note the taproom won’t serve food but will allow patrons to bring outside food (encouraging “brewery picnics”), a terrasse facing the Lachine Canal park and Montreal’s skyline is planned for May, and the owners plan creative collaborations with local businesses (including a coffee beer with a local coffee house) as they aim to brew for people who say “I don’t drink beer” and to become a community fixture that brings jobs and people together." - Tim Forster
