"In Silver Lake, a boba tea–fueled buzz has been brewing since mid-October around a futuristic, Taiwanese-inspired cafe launched by Donald Glover called Jellyman. Co-founded with Luke Wood and led on the menu by Jesse Fresnedi (formerly of Boba Guys), the shop leans into playful, 'weird' flavors drawn from Fresnedi’s upbringing in the Philippines, Singapore, and England and uses fresh, organic ingredients made in-house. Traditional offerings include matcha, milk tea, and brown sugar boba made with caramelized cane sugar, while unconventional signatures like Thai limeade, rose hibiscus, and Peanut Butter and Jelly, Man (peanut milk, grape jelly, and maple sea salt foam) stand out; toppings include chia seeds, grass jelly, egg pudding, maple sea salt foam, and butterfly-pea “blue spots,” with alternative milks and customizable sweetness levels. The space—redesigned by Barbara Bestor with a giant front window, bench seating, wood paneling, Mexican tiles from Ceramico Suro, a giant round Jellyman statue by Geoff McFetridge, staff uniforms by Kevin Carney, and an original score by Ludwig Göransson—feels like being on board a spaceship. I’ve noticed a steady queue since opening; prices range from $5.75 to $8 (add-ons $0.85 or $1), and the shop is open at 4019 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90029 from noon–8 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and noon–10 p.m. Friday–Saturday." - Mona Holmes
