"I visited an indoor/outdoor eatery called Dukunoo Jamaican Kitchen at 316 NW 24th Street that brings Jamaican cuisine to Wynwood with an extensive menu of modern takes on island fare. Small plates include pressed plantains topped with crispy snapper, salt cod fritters, jerk corn, and a red pea soup with salted beef and pig tails, while larger plates feature fried chicken, oxtail, whole roasted snapper, and shrimp skewers; a full bar is also available. To pay homage to its roots there’s a jerk “stand” serving chicken and pork jerk by the quarter, half, or whole pound with classic sides like island slaw and fried plantains, and the namesake dessert—dukunoo, a West African word for “sweet thing”—is a starchy, pudding-like treat wrapped in a leaf, tied, and steamed. Co-owners Shrusan Gray, Leonie McKoy, and Rodrick Leighton say their mission is to open a Caribbean restaurant that is eclectic, chic, artsy, and upscale and that will positively represent Caribbean culture. The space matches the menu’s modern feel with industrial tables and seating, bright modern paintings, high industrial ceilings, and wooden signage, and offers live music, DJs, and rotating themed nights. Dukunoo is billed as Wynwood’s first and only full-service, upscale Caribbean dining experience and is now open for lunch, dinner, brunch, and happy hour (Thursday–Saturday noon–midnight; Sunday 11 a.m.–11 p.m.; happy hour Monday–Friday 5–7 p.m.).
