"At 18726 Cameron Road in Manor, Texas, I stepped into the Cele Store (pronounced “seal”), a family-run spot established in 1891 and owned by the Weiss family since 1956 whose withered exterior was used in the 2003 remake and has also appeared in other films and TV. Inside the creaky door the aroma of barbecue and country radio makes you feel transported back in time; walls are hung with antique farming tools, taxidermy, and historic photos, tables are draped in butcher paper with baskets of crackers and Halloween decorations, and local country bands occasionally play on an indoor stage. The barbecue is straightforward and old-school—brisket and ribs seasoned simply with salt and pepper and smoked in a brick pit that’s been in use since 1964—while the rotating menu (pork tenderloin, baby back ribs, sausages, brisket) comes with sides like pickled jalapeños, cheddar, sandwich bread, pickles, and onions (not coleslaw or potato salad), and guests are welcome to bring their own sides, making it a warm, friendly, very Texan experience quite different from the horror films that used its exterior." - Marisa Mirabal
