"At 4514 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, I saw the McDonald’s become a battleground after workers alleged management told them to fashion masks from coffee filters and dog diapers and failed to provide protective equipment or COVID-19 protocols; employees said they were required to work while ill, and by late May six had tested positive, rising to 11 by mid-June and spreading to 35 people, prompting a formal complaint to the Alameda County Public Health Department and a lawsuit against franchisee Michael Smith, who owns this and other East Bay locations. Judge Patrick McKinney issued a temporary restraining order keeping the restaurant shuttered since the May 26 strike until it can prove it has adopted measures including physical distancing, temperature checks, and an adequate supply of masks and gloves; Smith says he has a reopening plan that the Alameda County Department of Environmental Health approved last week, and both sides will return to court on July 2." - Eve Batey
