"I read that Forbidden Island, an Alameda tiki bar that opened at 1304 Lincoln Avenue in 2006, maintained a Gold Rush–era tradition of patrons affixing decorated dollar bills to its ceiling and walls; staff removed four garbage bags full of cash totalling $10,367, and owner Michael Thanos donated $8,000 to local nonprofits (Building Futures, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter, and Alameda Family Services) while putting $2,000 back on the ceiling until the next culling." - Eve Batey
