"I observed the Las Vegas Farmers Market at Downtown Summerlin convert into a drive-thru to prevent the spread of COVID-19, so people can still get eggs, fruits, and vegetables fresh from the farm but, instead of wandering the different produce stands to select apples, citrus, eggs, and leafy greens, they wait in their cars under the shopping center’s pavilion while employees fill orders and drop them in the trunk. Staff limit their contact with customers and product, wear gloves and sometimes masks, and have set up hand-washing stations and sanitizers; five or six employees gather orders. Owner Rod Huebert, a third-generation farmer who supplies the market from his Reedley farms, says everything comes from their farms (harvested one to two days before loading) and nothing is purchased off a dock. Eggs have been in high demand, and Huebert listed 14 types of citrus—including blood oranges, Mandarin oranges, and lemons—three types of apples, pears, golden beets, baby and regular carrots, onions, potatoes, yams, lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, and mustard greens arriving this week. The response has been positive, with customers repeatedly thanking them for providing fresh produce when grocery lines are long. The market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m." - Susan Stapleton
