"Opening May 4 at 11 a.m., I’m excited for the new Gudetama Cafe at 8340 La Palma Avenue in Buena Park Place (a mall in Anaheim), which will be the first of its kind in Southern California. Although the Orange County location hasn’t shared its menu yet, the Tokyo counterpart (opened in 2019 and since closed) served an array of Gudetama-themed dishes and drinks—like yellow curry rice enveloped in a bacon blanket and hot chocolate with a Gudetama marshmallow—and offered a fully immersive experience with themed decorations and merchandise for purchase; similar cafes in Singapore and Osaka have also closed. Early exterior photos circulating on social media show a yolk-yellow paint job, and interior photos reveal a branded counter-service area and wall decals. On opening day the cafe will host a party where the first 100 guests in line receive a VIP gift bag and drinks are buy-one-get-one-free all day. Gudetama, created in 2013 and named from a portmanteau of lazy (gude gude) and egg (tamago), has been called the “Hello Kitty of Japan’s millennial generation” and has spawned extensive merchandise, including home goods, collaborations with Baggu, and chopsticks." - Rebecca Roland
