While Sun Nong Dan’s hulking stone bowls of galbi jjim are the main draw, those in the know prefer to go in the mornings when the restaurant has to be open for prep (Sun Nong Dan is open 24/7), and when four soup options are available for just $11.99 (or $12.99 to-go) from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those who spend the weekend cooking will find soulful, beefy bowls of seolleongtang or my favorite — tta-roh gukbap — which is a profoundly dank bowl of dried cabbage with tender, simmered beef that tastes straight out of a grandmother’s kitchen. The dried cabbage exudes an almost vegetal spinach-like flavor that complements the spicy beef broth. It’s probably the best meal $12 can buy in Los Angeles, presented alongside with rice and unlimited banchan like any good Korean meal.
