"Perched atop the new 12-story Marriott Bethesda Downtown, I experienced a rooftop bar that bills itself as Bethesda’s “first and only high-rise rooftop bar,” with floor-to-ceiling windows and a large terrace that frame skyline views and a deep-blue interior meant to evoke the Potomac (that blue hue even shows up in cocktails like a French 75). Non-hotel guests can zip up in a separate elevator from the lobby. The speakeasy-styled cocktail list brings the name to life: the “Tiger Vogue” mixes Makers 46, Tiger Nut, Chicory, and Orange 20, then is stirred into a flask and hidden inside a book; “Daisy’s Dilemma” pairs Aviation gin, Lillet, chamomile, and vegan foam; and “Marmalade Skies” features Haku vodka, white peach juice, yuzu, and rosé. The draft list prioritizes Maryland beers from breweries like Calvert Brewing, Waredaca Brewing Company, Manor Hill Brewing, Cushwa Brewing Co., Hysteria Brewing Company, and Peabody Heights, and there’s a non-alcoholic option whipped up with espresso, vanilla, cinnamon, and Fever Tree tonic. The food menu is built for sharing, with hummus tapenade, crab dip, pimento cheese deviled eggs, and a meat and cheese board that pulls products from Georgetown’s Stachowski Market. Hip Flask opens Tuesday, May 3, at 5 p.m.; hours are 5–11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m.–midnight Friday and Saturday, and it’s a 21-and-up, first-come, first-served bar." - Adele Chapin
