"Opening June 5 in a 3,200-square-foot space in Vienna, Virginia, I report that Carnegie Diner & Cafe (501 Maple Avenue W.)—a modern American diner named for its proximity to legendary Carnegie Hall but unaffiliated with New York’s Carnegie Deli—brings its first location outside the tri-state area. The 92-seat spot serves all-day breakfast (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.), including lobster-topped eggs Benedict, avocado toast, a BLT quinoa bowl, steak and eggs, a dozen types of pancakes, decadent waffles, and French toast, and it also offers its popular 24-layer chocolate cakes. Lunch and dinner menus include rib-eye steak, burgers, salads, Atlantic salmon, fish n’ chips, shrimp spaghetti, and spaghetti carbonara, while sweets range from pies and cupcakes to over-the-top milkshakes and a full page of healthy entrees like a souvlaki platter and an Impossible vegan burger. Owner and executive chef Stathis Antonakopoulos, a Greek restaurateur with D.C. ties who once served as director of operations at Kellari on K Street NW, will decorate the space with supersized photos of Carnegie Hall and musician portraits, and the bar lineup adds anytime-brunch drinks (mimosas, bellinis, bloody marys) plus wine, beer and cocktails." - Tierney Plumb
