"Set to open in early 2021 in Broadgate next to Liverpool Street Station, this vast two-floor, over-40,000-square-foot Italian food hall will combine multiple dining and retail formats under one roof. It will house three restaurants (two opening at launch and a third, called Terra, arriving next summer), three bars, six eateries, two terraces, 12 retail departments, a large cookery school and a separate wine shop expected to list over 2,000 Italian labels. Terra is billed as a modern Italian restaurant focused on treating high-quality ingredients as little as possible, with a central wood-fired grill as the cooking theatre; the other venues include a traditional pasta-and-pizza restaurant and a market-style counter-to-table outlet described as informal and convivial. The ground floor will feature a Gran Caffè, gelateria, bakery, pizza stall, takeaway counter and a quick-service area aimed at office lunches (which depends on offices reopening), and the project is recruiting roughly 300 staff. The site joins a global empire founded in Turin in 2004 with more than 40 food halls worldwide; the operator has recently severed ties with Mario Batali amid misconduct allegations and faces wider scrutiny around long-time partners as it expands into London. Plans are presented as contingent on post-pandemic conditions, so timing and specifics may still change." - Adam Coghlan
