"I've learned that after 36 years in Berkeley’s Elmwood neighborhood, Café La Méditerranée (commonly called Café La Med) — a longtime spot on a prime stretch of College Avenue known for kebabs, chicken pomegranate, and baklava — has been listed for sale by owner Garbis Baghdassarian because, he says, “I’m going to be 72 years old. How long can I go on? I need to retire.” Neither of his two children nor his San Francisco business partner wants to take over the Berkeley restaurant, and although he's selling the restaurant, he owns the building and is not selling that; he hopes to find a buyer who will keep the space as a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean restaurant since it's the only one in the area." - Janelle Bitker
