"Coming to La Jolla, Valley Farm Market La Jolla — a fixture in Spring Valley for over six decades — will land in the Windansea neighborhood as the 5,000-square-foot anchor of a new mixed-use complex at the corner of La Jolla Boulevard and Nautilus Street developed by the Murfey Company. Scheduled to open in August 2019, the butcher shop, grocery, and eatery fulfills expansion dreams for owner Derek Marso, grandson of the market's founders, and represents a homecoming for Cali Comfort BBQ owner Shawn Walchef, a minority partner who grew up nearby; Walchef and Marso, who host a barbecue-themed podcast and often collaborate on festivals and charity events, say they hope to bring the same community focus to La Jolla. The market will feature an in-house butcher stocked with USDA prime Black Angus, grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and wild-caught sustainable seafood, plus ready-to-cook meats like carne asada and stuffed chicken and daily-made poke; alongside produce, pantry staples, specialty grocery items, beer and wine, it will also offer prepared food ranging from rotisserie chickens to its award-winning barbecued brisket, tri-tip, pulled pork, and sides." - Candice Woo
