The Gate Bar and Restaurant

Irish pub · Jamaica Plain

"A fledgeling Irish pub in Jamaica Plain has closed down, less than a week after St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The Gate closed without warning, and the building housing the restaurant and several residential units is now for sale. Owner Paul Byrne — who previously ran James’s Gate, a nearly 20-year-old Irish pub in Jamaica Plain that closed in 2015 — opened the Gate in May 2017 in the former Coco’s Lounge space. The restaurant had undergone renovations to feature wooden arches behind the bar that were brought in from a building in Dublin, giving the space a decidedly European feel. The food menu included a mixture of Irish pub fare and American items, including nachos, lamb burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie, as previously reported. 'We regret to announce that The Gate Bar & Restaurant has closed this week,' Byrne said in a statement on the closure to Jamaica Plain News. 'We want to thank our customers and the Egleston Square neighborhood for the loyal support this past year. We are sad to have to permanently shut our doors and apologize for any inconvenience.' The sale of the restaurant is active, and the space is advertised as a turnkey operation. Stay tuned for details on what might replace the Gate in Egleston Square." - Dana Hatic
