"Located on Notre-Dame Street West, this Saint-Henri newcomer from Chef Jae-Anthony Dougan presents a pan-Caribbean, island-hopping takeout menu that aims to reframe Caribbean food in Montreal. The menu pairs Trinidadian doubles (fried flat dough filled with curried chickpeas) with Dougan’s pimento-smoked, jerk-spiced chicken served with Haitian-style rice, and features the namesake vegan Tropikàl bowl—containing callaloo (a Jamaican stew of leafy greens), chickpea chana, plantains, and other vegetables—that the menu says “brings different parts of the Caribbean together in one bowl.” Dougan sees the restaurant as proof that Caribbean cuisine belongs on Montreal’s prime restaurant row alongside heavyweights, and he hopes the Saint-Henri location, all-Black ownership with partners Jamaal Gittens and Kevin Selman, and future plans for a lively weekend rum cocktail lounge and an Ottawa sister location will help raise its profile; for now the pandemic has it operating as a takeout and delivery spot." - Valerie Silva
