"Stepping into the cafe at 296 Ocean Avenue, I watched four construction workers turn into happy kids over multi-colored shaved ice dripping with syrup and sugar; opened in spring 2023, the shop is stocked with malasadas, craft coffee, shave ice and soon Dole Whip, and is co-owned by Tony Ho and Randy Santos after successful Ocean Malasadas pop-ups merged with Ho’s longtime Pineapples shave-ice spot. Fans can still expect Pineapples’s classic shave ice flavors — guava, Blue Hawaii, and coconut with coconut shavings — and the team is aiming to take their shaved ice to a new level of innovation and quality (a Dole Whip machine is en route). Andytown Coffee supplies the brew for now but the cafe plans to feature many Bay roasters; the owners, who grew up in the Excelsior, position the shop as a slice of island lifestyle and a go-to for after-school treats and pre-work caffeine, with hopes to expand hours and open additional outposts. Far From Paradise Cafe is open at 296 Ocean Avenue Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m." - Paolo Bicchieri
