"Nadege Fleurimond, an author and chef-owner, has been actively teaching and sharing soup joumou: she “had just finished shooting a soup joumou tutorial for her social channels to help demystify the daunting dish” and will be hosting a live soup joumou cooking class in Brooklyn on December 26 in partnership with Little Haiti BK. On the diversity of the dish she notes, “A lot of us think that soup joumou is this very one specific thing,” says Nadege Fleurimond, and she emphasizes cultural transmission — she makes the soup for family and friends who aren’t Haitian and urges others to continue sharing it: “I think it is on our part as Haitians to keep sharing [soup joumou],” Fleurimond says. Her perspective underscores the soup’s evolving role beyond Haitian households: “That’s the beauty of it,” says Fleurimond." - Annie Harrigan
