"Uncle J’s in Dumbo is home to an impressive number of dutch ovens. (Twelve, to be exact.) And, as soon as a customer walks in, whoever’s behind the counter at this Caribbean restaurant will begin taking the lids off each simmering pot, filling the small space with whiffs of jerk chicken, roti, braised turkey, and collard greens. From the team behind Lucky Rabbit, Uncle J’s is one of the neighborhood's best options for a quick, casual, and affordable lunch, especially if you opt for one of the combo plates. The four different options range from $15 to $29. Each one comes filled to the brim and too heavy to carry very far. So lug yours to the water, and make all those tourists jealous. Food Rundown Combo Plates We usually go for the $18 Combo #2, because you can leave knowing that you didn’t spend over $20 and you’ll still get two meals out of it. This combo comes with one starch, two vegetable sides, and one protein. We support following your heart, but if your heart is overwhelmed by the sheer number of simmering pots, we can help. The oxtails are stewy and saucy, the curry chickpeas are milder than their name suggests (not necessarily a bad thing), the coconut-braised kale is a must, and the everything fried rice sounds enticing, but tastes like a pretty run-of-the-mill fried rice. For sides, go for the roti or the rice and peas." - Willa Moore
